When ever you log into gmail it asks for username and password or email and password.
If you make a change in the email by putting a '.' (dot) there will be no change and the email id will then also get redirected.
for example:-
email : xyz@gmail.com
you can write it as x.yz@gmail.com
and even x.y.z@gmail.com
So make your friends surprise by doing this in front of them and have fun.
